Bali here I come again! Two weeks of wiggling toes into the sand, floating in the ocean and toasting on the beach. No surfing this time but hopefully I’ll be back with loads of pics of temples, ceremonies that will probably keep this blog running for the next couple of months!

Jardins, Jardin

These pics were taken at a garden show (yes, another one I’m afraid so) in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris. It had everything a garden lover could dream of: pots, plants and loads of ideas on how to organise, what to plant on a box sized balcony or terrace.

C’était au Jardin des Tuileries, le 7 juin dernier. Tous les plaisirs du jardin pour parisiens en mal de verdure : des plantes, des fleurs, mais aussi des pots, des jardinières et pleins d’idées pour aménager un balcon, une terrasse, selon sa taille et son exposition.

A vegetable garden I wish I could have with tomatoes, salads and herbs.
Une promenade bien agréable, où l’on pouvait passer d’un potager, que je rêverais d’avoir, avec des tomates, des salades et bien sûr des herbes aromatiques.

Gardens are becoming more and more an outdoor extensions of the house where you entertain friends or simply relax.
Le jardin devient une pièce à vivre à ciel ouvert. On l’emménage avec des coussins, des voilages, pour y lire ou bien faire la sieste, bercé par la musique du vent.

Take the zinc rooftops from your typical parisian buildings and turn it into a zinc vase that’s a perfect match for roses.
J’ai bien aimé cette idée de faire descendre le zinc des toits parisiens et le transformer en vases et autres objets déco qui se marient si bien avec les roses.

I first came across these pocket garden containers in the shop Merci. They come in all shapes and sizes to fit on balconies, terraces around the house. Now all I need to find is a very low-maintenance plant.
La première fois que j’ai croisé un Bacsac, c’était dans la boutique Merci. Un sac souple et léger, en textile pour les rambardes des balcons, les terrasses ou dans la maison. Le principe me plaît bien.

A sunbed, the smell of tomatoe leaves, kids playing around. Looks like summer is just around the corner.

Cocktail

Just like Tom Cruise in the movie? Not quite. I took my first cooking lessons with l’Atelier des Chefs when they first started out about 5 years ago in France and now they’ve opened branches all across France, London and even Dubai. During their cocktail classes you’ll be able to shake that shaker to the left and to the right with all your might and make 4 different kinds of tapas as many as you want if you’re famished.

Comme Tom Cruise dans le film éponyme ? Pas tout à fait. Dans le cours de l’Atelier des Chefs, certes vous aurez un shaker entre les mains pour avoir la cocktail attitude mais sans les jongleries. Au programme 4 cocktails à réaliser dans l’ordre que l’on veut et 4 tapas pour l’accompagnement. Ca tombe parce que vous voyez le sketch de Florence Foresti à propos de la minette qui est torchon, chiffon, carpette avec une demi-gorgée de champagne ? Cette fille lamentable c’est moi. Alors les tapas pour éponger les cocktails c’est une aubaine, surtout qu’on peut refaire l’atelier tapas autant de fois que l’on veut contrairement aux cocktails où l’on est rationné avec ses 4 petits coupons à remettre au barman.

I went with some of my colleagues from work and had a great time. Nice change to classic dreary team building activities such as going around in circles on a gloomy karting track or turning into a living black and blue bruise after a paintball session.

And the trick that everyone in my group remembered is that you should crush the mint leaves without tearing them to release the menthol. Tear the leaves and the menthol gets sapped by sap.

Un bon moment partagé entre collègues de bureau (oui, il existe une alternative au team building qui ne se résume pas à tourner en rond sur un circuit de karting ou se retrouver criblé de bleus suite à une partie féroce de paintball).

Et si il y a une leçon que tout le monde dans mon groupe aura retenu, c’est que la feuille de menthe il faut l’écraser sans la couper pour libérer le menthol qui se trouve sur la feuille. Si on coupe la feuille de menthe, ça libère la sève qui neutralise le menthol. Vous scotchez la galerie avec cette remarque tout en shakant votre mojito, à consommer avec modération bien sûr !

Lazy Sunday

Everyone’s probably already seen the Beatles Rock Band opening cinematic. Eventhough I’m not a video games afficionada (I loved the Pacman and Space Invaders era, then quitted with Mario) I think studios do an amazing job with the cinematics. Much better than the graphics used in the game itself.

Vous avez tous probablement déjà vu, la cinématique d’ouverture du jeu vidéo Beatles Rock Band présentée à l’E3. Je suis loin d’être une gameuse (je suis restée bloquée avec Pacman, Space Invaders, puis j’ai laissé tombé avec Mario) mais je reste fascinée par la qualité du graphisme des cinématiques qui, je trouve, sont bien meilleures que celle du jeu en soi.

This video obviously appealed to me since it’s all done in stop motion animation. Probably took gadzillion hours to do but worth every single one of it. The result is totally wicked.

C’est du stop motion donc forcément ça me plaît. Je n’ose même pas maginer les heures que ça a pris pour la réalisation mais le résultat est dément.

Jardins de couleur

Every year Chaumont-sur-Loire hosts a garden show, each year brings a new theme. This year’s it’s gardens of colour. Here are a few pics of the ones that caught my eye.

Chaque année a lieu le Festival des jardins de Chaumont-sur-Loire. Cette année le thème est celui des jardins de couleur. Certains sont plus ou moins réussis. Petite ballade en photos des jardins qui m’ont marqués.

‘Laundry in Bloom’ was my favourite garden, with it’s monochrome of blue, violet and carmin garnments, blown back and forth by the wind. I found it both very soothing and calming, and could have spent hours there, just watching all this colourful laundry.

‘Lessive en fleurs’ était mon préféré avec son camaïeu de linge bleu, lavande et carmin, bercé par le vent. J’aurais pu rester des heures là, simplement à contempler ces draps multicolores.

The ‘yellow line‘ had a urban feel about it. A sort of New-York cabish yellow coloured line combined with dark coloured plants, trying to imitate the black asphalt.

‘La ligne jaune’ était le plus urbain avec ce jaune façon signalétique routière, similaire à celui des taxis new-yorkais. Et des fleurs aux nuances sombres pour imiter le noir du bitume.

‘Poème coloré’. I just love this shot with that strawberry flower on the foreground and that pebble lying on the sand. Very zen.

Un plant de fraisier, un galet posé du sable blanc et bleu. Très zen comme jardin.

I think these were taken in the garden called ‘Vowels’, the literary garden. Words, wishes, scribbled on a piece of paper by visitors and left hanging in the air.

Ces photos ont été, je pense, prises dans ‘Voyelles’, le jardin littéraire. Des mots, des voeux, écrits sur un bout de papier en espérant qu’ils se réalisent.

And a whole bunch of colourful and gorgeous flowers taken here and there, I just can’t remember where exactly.

D’autres photos de fleurs, de toutes les tailles et de toutes les couleurs, mais de là à me rappeler dans quel jardin elles se trouvaient…

Zee Avi

It’s not on my blogroll, but it should be because Eric Boisson’s blog keeps my iPod filled with great artists.

This time, I’ll be adding Zee Avi on my tracklist. This highly talented young lady, who just turned 23, is from Malaysia. Now I reckon I’ m not the most knownledgeable person on the popularity of Asian artists (my ears should be more curious, yes) but I don’t think there are that many. The ones I know of are M.I.A (British from Sri-Lanka) and Tanita Tikaram (British again but part Malay). From now on, I can happily add to that list Zee Avi, songwriter, singer discovered via the web (full fairy tale story on her myspace).

I think she’s lovely for lot’s of silly and personal reasons:
- she’s from Borneo, Sarawak, to be precise and that brings back childhood memories of my dad going there back during his timber business days.
- if my ears didn’t play tricks on me, her song “Kantoi” is partly written in Malaysian and eventhough I don’t speak it, I understood some of the lyrics because some Malaysian words are exactly or more or less the same in Filipino (Tagalog).
- she plays the uke and that is über cool!

What can I say, this is super bagus material and I hope she’s got a show scheduled soon in Paris.

Le blog d’Eric Boisson est une mine en matière de découvertes musicales.

Cette fois-ci, la chanteuse s’appelle Zee Avi. La demoiselle a tout juste 23 ans et nous vient de Malaisie. Alors je reconnais humblement que ma connaissance en matière de chanteuses asiatiques ou d’origine asiatique n’est pas très étendue (mes oreilles ne sont pas assez curieuses), mais il me semble qu’il n’y en ai pas des masses. Pour ma part j’en connais que deux : M.I.A (anglaise originaire du Sri-Lanka) et Tanita Tikaram (anglaise, avec des origines malaisiennes) Dorénavant il faudra rajouter Zee Avi à cette liste pour mon plus grand plaisir. D’autant plus que c’est une jolie web success story qu’a connu cette auteur, compositeur et interprète. Tous les détails de son conte de fée sur son myspace.

Moi je la trouve attachante pour des tas de raisons totalement personnelles et irrationnelles :
- elle est née à Bornéo dans l’état de Sarawak et ça me rappelle tout un tas de noms de villes malaisiennes ou indonésiennes (Balikpapan) où je n’ai jamais mis les pieds mais où mon père s’est souvent rendu pour son travail
- sa chanson “Kantoi” est en partie écrite en malaisien et même si je ne le parle pas, j’arrive tout de même à comprendre quelques mots car certains mots sont les mêmes en philippin. So clever !
- elle joue du yukulele !
Bref tout ça pour dire que son album est super bagus (excellent) ! Mon coup de coeur.

La maison à Rose

Is one out of the five cottages that make up the Little Houses on the Prairie in Brittany. The five cottages are named after their original occupants: Rose, Louise, Marie, Josephine and Florence. I was lucky enough to stay in the cosy and sweet little maison à Rose during the long Labour day week-end.

The minute you set foot in la maison à Rose, you can feel that Liz Lamour, the owner, has put in all the love and attention into every piece of vintage furniture that decorates this tiny little cottage.

I simply fell in love with the tiles in the bathroom. And Liz cleverly matched the blue monochrome of the tiles with the one of the books placed in a night stand.

And the monochrome doesn’t stop there! The book edges in the bedroom are red just like the painted hearts on the wooden floorboards.

And the vanilla coloured kitchen has it’s own set of purple, lilac, lavender books.

The house is warm and welcoming, just as Liz’s smile when she comes up to the house with her huge wicker basket filled with morning’s breakfast.

I spent endless blissfull hours taking pictures of every single corner of the cottage, discovering something new that would make la maison à Rose even more precious to me. I didn’t get a chance to catch a peek in the other cottages, but from the pictures I’ve seen on the website makes me want to go back for sure.

C’est l’une des cinq maisons qui font partie des Petites Maisons dans la Prairie en Bretagne. C’est Liz Lamour qui a décoré avec soin et attention les cinq gîtes aux noms de leurs anciennes occupantes : Rose, Louise, Marie, Joséphine et Florence. On sent que Liz a prêté un soin particulier à chaque meuble et objet qui décorent la maison à Rose. J’ai adoré le carrelage de la salle de bains, tout en camaïeu de bleu, ainsi que les livres qui sont eux aussi tous bleus. D’ailleurs, ce n’est pas la seule pièce dont la couleur des livres soit coordonnée à celle des pièces. La chambre en mezzanine affiche des tranches de livres de poches rouges comme les coeurs peints sur le parquet de la chambre. Et la cuisine vanille possède une déclinaison de vieux livres couleur lilas, lavande et violet. Dans tous les coins on découvre des petits objets qui ont été chinés avec soin et c’est bien ça qui fait le charme de la maison à Rose. Il faut dire qu’avec l’appareil photo entre les mains, mon regard découvrait tout le temps un nouveau élément de déco : une malle, une tasse en émail, un miroir qui soulevaient mon enthousiasme et rendait la maison à Rose encore plus chère à mes yeux. C’était très agréable d’y passer des heures à prendre ces photos. Et encore, je n’ai pas vu l’intérieur des autres maisons ! Mais les photos que j’ai pu voir sur le site, ne laisse présager que du bonheur si jamais j’ai la chance d’y retourner.

In the loop

I was sold with this line:
“To walk the road of peace, sometimes we need to be ready to climb the mountain of conflict.”
“Climb the mountain of conflict… You sound like a nazi Julie Andrews!”

I quite enjoy the aggressive, profane and savage tone in the trailer. I suppose I get a kick out of watching political leaders being scorned and derided eventhough it doesn’t get us anywhere. Nevertheless, I find it quite entertaining, specially with Peter Capaldi who plays the role of Malcolm Tucker (that’s him on the Obama inspired poster), the PM’s spin doctor who, as The Times put it “is the master of the rapid-fire, scatological character assassination, boiling through the sterile corridors of power like molten lava.”

Doesn’t look like “In the Loop” will be released elsewhere than in the US and the UK. Pity.

Jacket layering

It takes two to create this perfect combination. Leather jacket with stud detail by Balmain (forget the price tag!) And underneath, denim Diesel jacket to get that waterfall wavy flow. I’m keeping my eyes peeled for some high-street inspiration.

Illusion optique. Au départ je pensais que c’était une seule veste. Erreur, grossière erreur ! Tssss… C’est un duo de vestes. Dessus, veste cloutée en cuir de chez Balmain et en-dessous, du jean de Diesel qui crée cette vague souple en denim. Mon oeil bionique n’a pour l’instant rien repéré en clonerie dans ce style, hélas.

Another item I came back with from my shopping spree in London. Well, I couldn’t honestly come back without a pair of shoes, now could I!?! I’m not a huge fan of animal prints but this pair made my heart feet stop a beat. I saw a similar green version at Punky’s but knowing they were from Minelli’s, they were bound not to have them in a size 8. I stooped by over one of their shops (never know, miracles can happen) and surely enough, there they were standing proudly on their shelf, and halting at a staggering size 7. I just don’t get these shops (as well as others). What is it with their “all girls have petite feet and can’t, under any circumstances, be over a size 7″ policy. Anyhow, this Cinderella happilly slipped into these comfy snakeskin strappy sandals from River Island and took them back home accross the Channel and made a bargain: £69 (the one’s at Minelli’s cost €109)

Et la pièce de résistance de mon shopping londonien ? Ces sandales multi brides à imprimé python qui ressemblent beaucoup à celles de Minelli vues chez Punky. Mais comme c’est du Minelli, je pouvais faire une croix dessus moi et mon 41… Je suis quand même allée vérifier en boutique, histoire d’en avoir le coeur les pieds nets, mais le verdict était sans appel. Heureusement que de l’autre côté de la Manche, River Island existe et m’a fourni un substitut pythonesque ravissant et en plus m’a fait faire des économies : 69£ au lieu de 109€ pour celles de Minelli. Et toc !
